Is it Normal for Hair to Grow There?

Is it Normal for Hair to Grow There?

By: Melody Lau

Did you know the only parts of our body that aren’t covered in hair follicles are the palms of our hands and the soles of our feet?

You may not believe this fact after taking a closer look at your body, but our bodies are covered with vellus hairs. However, these tiny hairs may not be noticeable to the naked eye because of its colourless and translucent characteristics. Some examples of vellus hairs are baby hairs and peach fuzz.

On the other hand, we also have darker and longer hairs on our scalp, armpits and pubic area which are called terminal hairs. These hairs are the ones you may be worried or confused about, since terminal hairs can pop up on our fingers, toes, belly, and nipples.

I know that’s a lot of places, but we want to reassure you that all hair growth is perfectly normal. Our genetics are the main reason for random hairs popping up with certain ethnicities having darker, thicker and more hair follicles than others.

I remember I used to be embarrassed at the sight of dark hairs on my fingers and toes. I was jealous that some of my friends with lighter hair didn’t have noticeable hair on their knuckles, which led me to shave the short hairs off.

I shaved my knuckles a few times until I realized that there was no point since the hairs grew back quickly, and I think I was the only person who noticed the hairs. Whenever we’re insecure about a part of our body or personality, we tend to highlight and make a big deal over something others may not or ever be aware of. Perhaps, it’s human nature but I registered that body hair should not be something we should ever be embarrassed about.

But if you feel the need to shave, then go ahead and take a look at our “Older Sister Advice: Shaving" blog for guidance. You need to be careful whenever you shave, especially with hairs in sensitive areas. For instance, you may notice a couple of short or long hairs around your nipple. Be extremely cautious, as the blade can easily cut your nipple if you move too quickly.

If shaving or waxing currently freaks you out, then don’t feel pressured to get rid of your body hair. We understand that it can be tough when someone makes a comment about your body hair. It’s important to listen to yourself, be confident and know what you’re comfortable with.

All hair is natural. Everyone has hair everywhere,  whether we like it or not.

We’re always learning new information about our bodies daily, even as young adults. If you have any “embarrassing” questions that are living rent-free in your mind, be sure to message us on our contact form or just say hi on IG! Please remember that no questions are ever embarrassing or too awkward.
